Historically Speaking....

Located on our front door...

It seems appropriate to begin the first post today because it was one year ago, to-the-day, we moved into our historic home in New Market, Maryland...

In this blog I'll share with you the wonderful and not so wonderful aspects of living in a home built over 200 years ago.

If you love old homes, and all that goes with it OR just want to come along for the ride of revealing what's under 200 year old plaster, floor boards that aren't exactly even, attics that have "wings" during the summer, pictures taken that have a host of "orbs", archaeologist dig findings, living on a real "Main Street" where your neighborhood is lined with real shopkeepers who live and work at home, and lots more...then you'll love to be a guest here!

AND I'll love to hear from you if you have an older home and what you love or don't love about it, OR if you'd just like to make a comment or have a question about historical homes in general.

December 29, 2012- Moving Day!

Cold, windy, and bit icy. Thank goodness the snow had stop about 24 hours before allowing the streets to thaw out just enough to get the moving truck close enough to the house to unload all our belongings.

First problem: Our queen size box spring could not, would not, NO matter how we figured (okay the moving men), get up the front stair case. The over head landing was hanging out about only 4 inches too much, but even .5 inch would have made it an impossible task.

Hand built queen box spring...

With exact measurements it fit easily into our bed frame...

Solution: Build a box spring. With that said, the next morning my husband and I went off to the home improvement store for about 40 dollars in supplies. Within an hour the wooden box spring was built and the mattress on the floor found a home. I was happy.

Morning after moving day in our back yard.
A few remaining icicles had captured the rising morning sun....
